Purple Gromwell (Murasaki)

(Lithospermum erythrorhizon) – Murasaki, also known as Purple Gromwell or Redroot Gromwell, is a hardy perennial native to Japan. It features small white flowers and is cultivated primarily for its roots, which contain the valuable dye compound shikonin. Historically significant in traditional Japanese textiles and medicine, Murasaki offers both aesthetic and practical benefits to the garden.

Water: Prefers well-drained, organically rich soil; keep soil consistently moist but not waterlogged
Transplanting: Transplant outdoors after the danger of frost has passed, spacing plants 12 to 18 inches apart. Protect from severe frost to ensure overwintering.

Note: Harvest roots at the end of the second or third year to maximize pigment extraction for dyeing purposes. Murasaki has been used in traditional Chinese medicine and is currently studied for its antiviral properties.
