Heritage breeds, cottage fiber, and creative care

Our sheep are at the heart of our fiber work and land stewardship practice. Meet the flock, learn why we raise them, and see how their wool moves from pasture to beautiful, sustainable products.

Why Our Sheep Matter

We raise these sheep with care and deep respect as part of our young silvopasture system, grounded in good animal husbandry, appreciation for heritage breeds, and ethical fiber production. These members of our farm family support soil health, provide distinctive, high-quality wool, and shape how we experience both the joys and challenges of shepherding in the Southeast, even at a small scale.

Gulf Coast Native Sheep

GCNs are a versatile, dual-purpose heritage breed native to the southeastern United States. Our sheep produce beautiful wool and flavorful, lean meat. Once a popular landrace breed that developed through natural selection, they are now currently endangered. These amazingly resilient sheep are especially well-suited to hot, humid climates and are known for their hardiness and adaptability.

History & Characteristics
Gulf Coast Natives have a long history dating back to the 16th century, when Spanish colonizers introduced them to the Gulf Coast region. These small to medium-sized sheep typically weigh 80–120 pounds for ewes and 150–220 pounds for rams and wethers, producing fleeces in a wide range of patterns and colors, including creamy whites, tans, and gray browns. Their adaptability and natural parasite resistance make them ideal for extensive grazing systems.

Breeding & Production
These hardy sheep are known for excellent mothering ability and strong resistance to parasites and hoof rot. In addition to producing useful wool, Gulf Coast sheep yield a lean, deliciously mild-flavored carcass with little waste. Ongoing conservation efforts focus on preserving the breed’s genetic diversity and historical significance. They are one of the few American heritage breeds recognized by  Slow Food USA’s ‘Ark of Taste’, an international catalog highlighting culturally and ecologically significant foods worth preserving. Their lean, mild-flavored meat reflects centuries of adaptation to the Southeast’s climate and forage conditions.

Wool Quality
Gulf Coasts produce a medium-grade wool with a wide range of uses. Due to their diversity, and their inherent variations, our flock has several with fleeces that are on the finer side, closer to 23 – 24µ.  Fleeces are typically open, low in grease, and wavy to crimpy, with an average staple length of 4–6 inches yield between 4–7 pounds. The wool felts well, blends easily, and takes dye readily. Handspun yarn is suitable for blankets, outerwear, and knitted projects, and is often soft enough to wear next to the skin. Our flock tends toward the finer end of the spectrum, producing wool well suited for durable blankets and outerwear as well as garments like sweaters and socks.

Our sheep are not only producers, they are teachers.

We offer hands-on and classroom-style learning opportunities that connect people to sheperding and fiber handling on small and urban farms.

Intro – Sheep for Small & Urban Farms

3-Day Sheep for Fiber Intensive

We believe good fiber begins with good husbandry. The way sheep live on the land directly shapes the quality of the wool they produce.

Wool from our flock is processed thoughtfully, often in small batches, with attention to preserving its natural character.

  • Skirted and scoured on-farm
  • Milled locally for final processing
  • Offered as natural and naturally-dyed fleece, roving, batts, or blends

Each product reflects the sheep it came from and the conditions of that season. Subtle, natural variation is part of the value.

Breeding Philosophy & Availability

We offer a limited number of sheep and lambs each year.

Heritage breeds offer numerous benefits. While our flock is diverse and carries multiple traits, we focus heavily on health/hardiness, resiliency and fiber quality, keeping dual-purpose awareness in mind. We breed every other year, allowing our ewes time to focus fully on raising their lambs with reduced stress. In the off year, they are able to put their energy into growing premium-quality fleeces without the added demands of gestation and lactation. While this approach isn’t required, it suits our small spinner’s flock and supports the well-being of both sheep and farmers.

Our sheep generally range in price from $150–$350, depending on age, fleece quality, and breeding history. Pricing reflects the care, handling, and selection that go into raising animals suited for long-term stewardship.
