The Sweetest Things Come In Small, Fluffy Packages

French Angoras raised with care, producing luxuriously soft fiber and calm ‘fiber seed’ companions for makers and small farms.

Why We Love These Little Fiber Seeds

Our French Angoras are small but signficant contributors to the farm. Most of our rabbits naturally shed their fiber every 90–120 days, though individual shedding patterns vary. This rhythm creates a steady, renewable fiber supply that fits beautifully into a small-scale fiber system.

Whether you’re a handspinner, knitter, or fashion designer, French Angora fiber adds a soft halo and warmth that elevates any finished work. We often joke that these rabbits grow clouds like clockwork, and they seem entirely unbothered by the idea of sharing it.

Fiber Quality

Fiber quality begins with health. We prioritize comfort, clean and protected housing, thoughtful grooming schedules, and proper nutrition, knowing that good fiber follows good care. With health and handling as the foundation, our breeding selections focus on density, staple length, softness, and rabbits that thrive with regular interaction.

As a result, French Angoras produce wool of exceptional quality that is both luxurious and practical. Their fiber has long been compared to cashmere or silk, prized for its softness, warmth, and lightness.

French Angora fiber is:

  • Fine, silky, and lightweight

  • Up to 8x warmer than sheep’s wool by weight

  • Typically 3–7 inches in staple length, depending on the individual and season

It also blends beautifully with wool and other fibers, adding warmth without bulk, and with a bit of patience and care, takes dye well. On its own, it creates incredibly soft yarns suited for next-to-skin garments, trims, and special accessories.

History & Characteristics

French Angora rabbits trace their origins to Ankara, Turkey, with written references dating back to the 18th century. Over generations, they were selectively bred for fiber production, temperament, and adaptability, eventually becoming a cornerstone of luxury textile traditions in Europe and beyond.

French Angoras are compact, medium-sized rabbits with a sturdy build and a notably calm demeanor. Unlike some other angora varieties, they have clean faces and ears, which makes them easier to care for and more approachable for first-time angora keepers. Their gentle temperament and manageable grooming needs are a big part of why we chose this breed for our farm.

Breeding & Husbandry

We approach breeding and husbandry with intention and restraint. Our rabbits are bred selectively, not continuously, with an emphasis on:

  • Calm, steady temperaments

  • Strong maternal instincts

  • Consistent fiber quality

  • Overall health and longevity

French Angoras are known for being attentive mothers during kindling and steady, patient caregivers. Kits are handled gently and regularly, helping them grow into calm adults comfortable with grooming and human interaction.

Daily care includes routine grooming, close observation, and respect for each rabbit’s personality. Some are curious and social, others more reserved, but all benefit from predictable routines and low-stress handling. Many of our rabbits will quietly settle in for grooming sessions, occasionally reminding us when it’s time by hopping onto a lap or nudging a brush.

Show & Pet Qualities

French Angoras are well loved in both the show world and home settings. Their docile nature makes them suitable for experienced fiber artists, small farms, and households with older children who understand gentle handling.

They are often easy to litter train, enjoy grooming sessions, and form quiet bonds with their caretakers. Each rabbit has a distinct personality, from the curious investigator to the calm observer, and living with them offers daily reminders that fiber work begins with relationship.

For many keepers, French Angoras become both companions and collaborators, offering a renewable source of fiber alongside moments of calm, routine, and connection.

French Angora fiber is prized for its softness, warmth, and versatility. On our farm, fiber is harvested through regular grooming and gentle shearing, prioritizing the comfort of the rabbit and the quality of the fiber.

  • Use it on its own for spinning and felting
  • Blended with wool or other fibers
  • Enjoy its natural color or experiment with vivid dye

Each product reflects the rabbit it came from and the conditions of that season. Subtle, natural variation is part of the value.

Rabbit-Focused Learning

Here in the States, rabbits were once far more common as farm livestock. Still valued worldwide, they’re raised across Europe, Asia, and Africa as a reliable source of protein, fiber, and fertility. In many farming systems, rabbits are an excellent addition to diversified farms because of their fast growth, efficient feed use, and minimal space requirements.

Rabbits for Small & Urban Farms Intensive

Rabbits are uniquely well suited for small and urban farms, offering high yields from a very small footprint. As some of the most efficient feed-to-protein converters of any livestock species, a single breeding pair can produce more meat in a year than a single steer while requiring only a fraction of the space, water, and feed. Beyond meat, rabbits also provide high-quality fiber from breeds like our French Angoras, cold manure that can be applied directly to gardens, and flexible breeding cycles that support small-batch production.
